Barbara is the founder of Beacon Writing Services Corporation, providing consulting, writing, editing, and production services for print media since 1991 and for the Web and new media since 1996. She has received awards for editorial services from the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Over the years Barbara has morphed from a technical editor to a visionary publishing strategist and communicator.
Barbara is active in the Capital PC User Group (CPCUG), a computer "Users Helping Users" nonprofit educational organization. She chairs and is program director for the CPCUG Entrepreneurs and Consultants Special Interest Group (E&C SIG), which she founded in 1997. At E&C SIG monthly events, a diverse group gathers for presentations (and occasional 3-hour seminars), followed by continued conversation and networking, often at a local pub. If you're in the Washington, DC, area, join us. These monthly events are free and open to all.
In addition, Barbara is on the CPCUG Board of Directors. Since March 1996, in her capacity as Director of Corporate Communications, she has disseminated information about CPCUG events, training offerings, and community services via e-mail messaging, Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/cpcug), Web pages, blogs, print flyers, and online and print calendars. From August 1997 to July 2000, Barbara was Publisher/Editor of CPCUG's 64-page monthly magazine, Monitor.
Among her many eclectic interests, Barbara enjoys watching a good movie and Washington Wizards basketball games, and reading about advances in science and technology. In another lifetime, she earned a B.S. in chemistry from Bucknell University. Barbara started her career by applying for and receiving a National Science Foundation grant for work in the Chemistry Department laboratories at American University on the liquid barrier method of polymer separation.
